  • Anemone Bulbs - tips for germinating

Evening all I adore Anemone flowers but have never had much luck in getting them to grow 'en masse' usually one or two out of a packet of 25 will grow and reward me with blooms.

If you read the packet it says to "soak the tubers overnight before planting".
Well if you are anything like me that usually ends be being far longer than overnight and more like 24hrs... By which time you run the risk of actually drowning the bulb and you won't get that many to germinate, they will mould and rot!

So this year I did a bit of research and found a really helpful video from a commercial grower on the other side of the pond (America) where he explained that they actually like to be oxygenated while they 'plump' back up.

So I soaked the dried bulbs in warm water and changed the water every hour for 4-5hrs.
At which point I emptied the water and left them overnight.

The next morning I sewed them all (50) into a your average seed tray and just pushed them into the compost, close together and just covered their tops.

The idea being I'm not growing them in the seed tray just getting them to root. (I hope)

They like to germinate at approx 10c so I stuck the seed tray outside on a table and left them.

Don't make them to wet, the soil needs to be just damp. so cover with a piece of plastic or glass if heavy rain is forecast.

I'm pleased to report that after just 7 days I can already start to see healthy new roots starting to form on the bulbs .

Once they actually start to grow shoots I shall plant them in pots.
