  • Growing lots of Oca - containers or open ground?

Hello everyone, I've been having trouble searching for previous info on this as apparently Oca is too short a word for the search engine?!

Having grown Oca for the first time last year, we decided we like it very much and want to grow lots. I have plenty of tubers to plant but would appreciate guidance on best growing methods.

Most of my plants had been grown in open ground, Devon clay, they did okay but quality was poor due to pests. The tubers had lots of holes, I think from slugs.

I had much better quality tubers from a few grown in a patio container. This could be down to sheltered patio location or soil. Could better results be achieved in a raised bed full of compost?

    Try searching for "ocas".

Here's one to start you off..........https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...eep_45175.html

Thanks VC, that is helpful. My autocorrect tried changing it to orcas which was less helpful but still found some relevant threads.

I see you had a go at growing Oca some years back, did they work for you, do you still grow them?

They lasted a few years in open ground but I kept losing track of where they were
I'm starting again this year with a few donated Ocas.
I call them Orcas too - the thought of little pink whales in my garden makes me smile (but I'm nuts).

I noticed they're breaking through into the mainstream these days, or at least Dobbies has packs of 6 tubers (red, orange and white) for sale (for £3.99, I think it was). It's so difficult to remain a gardening hipster.

I'm going to try a few of these as grow in ground sheeting up the plot - dual action oca container and grass killer - wish me luck!
