  • My Record Book

Whilst sorting out today I found my "Allotment Record Book 2004-2005".
It starts on 17th June with what I picked and a nominal value.

Alongside each item, I've written what I did with it and there are some very strange "recipes" written in the back of the book! Mostly failures!

    Here's the first week
    17th June
2lb new Potatoes 50p Cooked for dinner
    1.5 lbs peas/mangetout 60p Stirfry/peas to freezer/peapod soup
    4lb Rhubarb £2.00 3lb Frozen. 1lb stewed with ginger
1.5 lbs raspberries £1.00 Dessert for a couple of days

    21st June
    8oz Mangetout 25p Dinner

    25th
    1lb 12oz Broad beans £1 = 9oz shelled = Freezer
    Lettuce Little Gem 20p Salad
Garlic £1 Preserved in oil - one jar
    1.5 lbs raspberries £1 Dessert.

I also wrote down my weight and I've put on 4lbs since then

By September 2004, there was £13.42 in the Moneybox from plants that I'd sold at the gate and a lot of veg & fruit in the freezer and in jars.

Sadly, I had to give up the allotment in 2005 as my OH was very ill. My garden doubled in size that year too and I've never had the time to go back.

Anyway, the point of all this is that I'm going to start my little book again. I've enjoyed looking back at the successes and preserving disasters so much that I'm going to turn over the page and start 2019 afresh.

I know some of you keep records of your crops. Care to share your methods or join me this year with a Little Book.

    I like it VC
I've done the weighting and recording all my harvest before. Not what I've done with it all though.
I might join you with this VC

I'm also recording what I spend
.......and what is "Free" - like the seeds from the Seed Circles.

I'd like to get to the end of the year in profit.

I'm going to do this too this year - I really enjoyed measuring and weighing my tromboncinos last year

I've always kept sowing/planting records, yearly seed lists etc - but I've never noted harvests weights. Perhaps get a small hanging scale for the shed, so I can do the weighing there, cos I'd forget once home...
          mmm something to think about

I'll pass on this one, VC. Costs will probably far outweigh my harvest this year! But I don't care as it's virtually my only hobby nowadays and I don't take holidays (I don't count going to see my mum). Plus, I'm hoping to have such a decent harvest that weighing it will be impractical.

I have several record books from various years. They all contain activity/sowing dates, have about half a dozen entries dating from March or April, and nothing thereafter....

The best I can do is try to post on the vine when I can....

From which I've cobbled together a spreadsheet, as part of the one I use to plan out a planting plan, with a few year's worth of random sowing/harvesting dates. I'm gradually forming a picture.

1Bee, I have lots of books/diaries like that too -they usually cover Jan - March and, maybe a bit in September.
A Diary is like a Life Sentence - you feel you have to write something every day. A book, without dates , just blank pages, doesn't make you feel guilty when you miss a week.
That's my theory anyway -............but I'm nuts so what do I know.

I like the idea but am terrible at keeping a record of when planted or harvested, though just a note book rather than a diary might make it easier, as for recording what I spend I couldn't do that as OH might see it and it would be moans about it
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I use spreadsheets for veg and flowers but it's usually for general info, keeping stock and plans rather than results. If I did results then it would just prove my plans were rubbish and that can't be right

^^^ That's why its better not to plan
Plans = expectations = maybe disappointment
No Plans = anything is good = happiness
