  • Maincrop potato suggestions

Been absent for a bit. Tried to get my head around for planning for next year but too many distractions.

Last year, I grew potatoes (for the first time) in buckets. Red Duke of York were amazing and delicious. King Edwards were very small by comparison. Probably due to a combination of too many seed potatoes per bucket and very hot summer.

Any suggestions on what to try for maincrop?

I like Picasso. Great flavour and a good crop. Lots of decent sized potatoes, virtually no marbles.

Edited to ask: what kind of potatoes do you like? I like firm, waxy ones. Picasso aren't salad potatoes, but they're not floury either. Kind of halfway house.

Im trying Cara for the first time.
Mixed reviews flavourwise but an apparently good defensive system against all sorts of nasties.
Just bought a sack from a local farmers market so will be trying a few of them in some synthias

I find it hard to beat good old Desiree, but it does depend a bit on what you want to use the potatoes for.

I tried Rudolph last year. Good crop and stored pretty well. Particularly good for roasties. Am planning to grow them again along with some charlottes.

I'm going with a few Sarpo Mira this year, as well as my usual Desiree - so if blight is really bad, I will at least get some to store for winter.

Love Record - Nice flavour Yellow potato. Chips are golden too because of the low starch and water content

Glad you asked this question. I too would like recommendations. I'm after spuds that are good for baking, mash and roasting. Reasonably slug resistant if poss.... Thanks !

I like Desiree, baked, mashed and roasted - but I do like waxy rather than floury potatoes. It's all a matter of taste
