  • Lucky bags now jars!

Lucky bags known in Japan as Fukubukuro (don't try saying it) are a way of clearing out last year's stock at bargain prices. They're very popular even though buyers have no idea what these Lucky bags will contain. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-46805873

I would buy one if they contained seeds as I like a Lucky Dip surprise - you never know what you'll pull out of the bag. Before Chr****** on the Sharing the Lurve Advent Calendar, NG, SP and I did this and I enjoyed it so much, I'm going to keep doing it.
I'm going to fill a bag with "old stock" seeds and pick one out a day to sow.

Would you like to Fukubukuro with me?

I'm working up to a year of randomness (just like last year).

Make 2019 the Year of Randomness.

          I have a Plan

Its Lucky bags with a twist - jars of random seeds.
I'm going through my old seed packets (flowers first) and sorting them into alphabetical order. Then emptying 10 seed packets starting with the same letter into a small jar (from my empty jar hoard that I knew would come in handy one day).
For example, one jar contains Polemonium, Poppy, Petunia - Trailing and compact, Penstemon, Portulaca, Physostegia, Potentilla, Phacelia and Phlox.
I'll sow one jar at a time in a seed tray and, as the seedlings emerge, try to match them to the seed packets.

The hypercritical amongst you will say that this is not completely random seed sowing as I know what is in each jar and have a 1/10 chance of guessing each seedling correctly.
Maybe, next year it will just be a big jar of every seed I have....................or maybe not

what happens when you have seeds with different germination requirements? For example some seeds will only germinate if they have light, while others like to be dark and snug under the surface.
            Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
            Endless wonder.

They'll struggle but, if something wants to grow, it'll grow.
They're only going to have 4 weeks to show up anyway. If they haven't appeared in that time, the seed tray will be emptied on the garden and another lot will be sown.

              No mollycoddling.

Good, Sarriss. That's what I like to hear.
I'm a bit worried that its too logical and therefore doesn't fit my image.

Since when has VC worried about stuff like that?

I need the help of a lovely young assistant please (don't even think of applying, rary).

So far, I have 23 Lucky jars, each containing seeds emptied out of 10 packets.
Each jar has a slip of paper inside it with a reference number eg D3 for the 3rd jar of seeds with names starting with D.
There is a corresponding envelope with the D3 seed packets inside.

The jars are in random order in a box and I need one of you to choose a number between 1 - 23. I shall count along the jars and pull out the one my lovely young assistant selects and, tomorrow, I'll sow those seeds.

Not entirely random but the best I can do at the moment.

                          So, a number please.
