  • Mole in asparagus patch

I'm aware that there a lot of moles in our rural area (in Brittany, France), but in the 4 years that we've lived in our current house, they have largely kept away from the main garden and veg plot. Until now. Our lawn has been decimated, but I'm OK with this as we were planning to redo that area next year anyway. But now the perpetrator has started to move north into the veg patch, and most specifically the asparagus patch.

I noticed a couple of mounds in it 2 days ago, and went out and stamped around to try and drive the mole away, but today there a whole load more mounds across one end of the asparagus patch. I'm a little surprised as there is a lot of gravel under the crowns, so it is obviously tunnelling above that layer. I've read that they enjoy eating asparagus shoots underground, but as it is now winter, there won't be any shoots - I'm more concerned that they might damage the crowns. Does anyone have any experience of this? Are my crowns safe? And any tips for getting rid of them? I don't really want to exterminate if I can avoid it, but I don't want them to move on to the PSB and kale beds!
