    Ripening Japanese quince

    We have a Japanese quince in the garden - the one with scarlet flowers rather than pink ones. I gave it a good prune and it's produced some fairly large fruit (picture attached), which are now starting to fall off the bush despite still being rather dark green in colour. (I don't think they ripen to as light a colour as regular quinces.) As soon as they fall, insects attack the blossom end and start hollowing the fruit out. So, I'm bringing them inside.

    Any tips for ripening the quinces indoors? I'm determined to do something with the fruit this year!

    If they are falling off then they are probably already ripe. The test is the scent. If they smell really strongly of quince then they are ready to use. If you are not ready to use them at present, we store ours in a cool dark spot in the workshed.

      Thanks, Palustris.

      Some have a strong scent, others seem to have none at all. But I'll put them in the dark rather than on the kitchen windowsill, where they are now, to ripen.
