  • Pruning a mop-headed dwarf pinus conifer.

I got one several years ago but it has got too big for its place. Can I prune it and how?

As you can see, it's on one side of my waterfall feature and needs a good trimming back.

I wouldn’t trim too severely. I would cut back the branches that distort the shape and then next year trim back a bit further and so on. That way you can get it under control without leaving ugly gaps and you can see where the new growth is coming from.

        Best of luck

I was hoping that would be the answer. Would you start doing a little bit now or leave it until next year?

I would do a little now and then more next year. Conifers are best pruned when they are actively growing.
