  • Hello from the East of England!

    Hello all,

I've been lurking in this forum for a while but had so many questions of my own that I thought I'd better register!

I live in Cambridgeshire and have grown fruit and veg for about 12 years, with varying degrees of commitment. Before we had kids, we had an allotment and had redcurrants, parsnips and artichokes coming out of our ears. As a result, I'm also keen on jam-making, brewing, chutneying and finding ways to preserve stuff in general. Since having kids, we've moved to the city centre and now live in a typical urban semi with a postage stamp-sized garden and no allotment . In the last couple of years, I've started growing things again (mostly tomatoes, beans and courgettes), so I'm keen to get advice about how to make my tiny plot as productive as possible

Hello and welcome to the vine Marmande

I'm also a back garden grower and find its best for me to sow in modules first that way I don't get gaps so there's less wasted space. I also use troughs and assorted containers for things like lettuce and anything I don't have space for.
      Location....East Midlands.

                    Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

I'm a very keen container planter - in fact, we're having our first beans this year, some of which were grown in a trough. I'll try to attach a picture if I can work out how...

...nope, can't quite manage it! Is this one of the privileges that you get once you've made a certain number of posts?

Anyway, we're having Cobra, Purple Tepee and Ferrari (both grown in a trough) and a lone Scarlet Emperor runner, which looked very sad on its own. It's only a small handful, but enough to supplement dinner tonight - and there are tons of flowers on the remaining beanstalks, so hopefully there'll be lots more on the way soon

There is some thing about number of posts / ability to upload photos... basically a mod will come along in a bit and say "keep posting and trying to upload photos, at some point you will be able to" almost as if they weren't quite sure...
