When you say outside the lens do you mean on the very outside of the unit like dew?

This can be addressed by putting silica packets inside the unit to absorb the internal moisture.�

Yes it's not inside the cam it's on the outside. (it was set up at 10pm last night and the pics were as clear as day showing us walking away, the temp was 16c, by 3am this morning the temp had dropped to 10c and it was very hard to make out Mr Fox due to the fogging... It is 'hung' in a tree approx 2mtrs from ground level and doesn't have much 'overhead' cover.

Tonight I have cut the base out out a deep 350g mushroom container and hung that over the camera, like a hood, in the hope it will stop the dew forming on the outside.

You could try the glass spray water away or similar, you are able in rainy conditions to not use window wipers.

This may sound a tad odd but have you tried licking the outside of the lens? Works for action cameras, but the time period for the trail cam is longer and it might wear off.

Second option is to get some mild shampoo - baby shampoo would do. Put half a dozed drops into a cup of water (distilled is best so that it doesn't leave a residue when it dries) and wipe thin onto the lens with a soft, clean, lint free cotton cloth. Once the water evaporates there's a thin film of soap over the lens which helps reduce/remove the condensation.

p.s. I forgot to say make sure the lens is clean first by wiping it with an alcohol lens wipe.

The mushroom carton is working fine at the moment thanks all. Apologies for the late replies I am useless at how to get notifications on a forum sorry.
Anyhow this pic was taken on the 18th July, it shows a young Fox, taken at 2:37am and the temp was 7c... As I had sheltered the lens a little I did not get fogging and this young chap hung around for approx 20mins according to the camera.
