  • Grapes researching WW1 ancestors

With the centenary coming to a close this year I was wondering whether there were many Grapes researching and remembering their ancestors who served and / or gave their lives for our freedom.

Personally I am researching my grandfather (served latterly with RWF), his cousin (served RGA), my great grandfather (served in the ranks in the West Yorks and was commissioned into the Lancs Fusiliers!) all who survived and my great great uncle (served in the Leicesters and was KIA in 1918 aged 18), my friend's grandfather (served in Essex and MGC, died 25/12/1916) and her great uncle (killed aboard a trawler that hit a mine in 1915).

No family medals from the era survived in the family sadly.

We have already done it db, in May it was my OH’s Great Uncles’s 100th Anniversary if his death. He served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was only 28 when he died. The family met at his graveside and laid a wreath of poppies. We visit him every November. I have also just found my grandfathers cousin who died at the Somme. He was only 29 and left a wife and 4 children. So sad.

My OH grandfather was killed on the first day of the Somme.
His name is on the The Thiephal Memorial as his body was never found.
He left three young sons behind.
The following year his wife died from the Spanish flu.
So very sad for three boys who never got to know their parents,

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I have the "Dead Man's Penny" that was given to the family of my FiL in memory of his brother. Its been passed down through the family to my late husband. I really should try to find another family member to give it to.
