  • Glen Lyon rasps, yuck

Given the time you wait from planting to harvest,it's extremely disappointing and actually makes me very cross that in hind site you find the variety you planted are really only good for culinary rather than yummyness.
Totally tart and horrid. I understand commercial grows need different attributes from a rasp than gardeners. Like firmness, shelf life, transport well, longevity, I know they're not bothered about sweetness because they can add the sugar. So why are the available in garden enters? Can't believe anyone would want to grow a sour raspberry.
I called in at garden center where I bought them and they still have many varieties one pot 3 canes for £5. I had the last laugh because I ate all there was that were ready, there were a lot! Including Glen lyon- which were same as mine, horrible.
Couldn't resist buying a pot of Tullemun , late I know but still time for them to shove a new cane up for next year.
Probably my fault? The label did state suitable for jam or cooking.
I complained to girl on checkout , she carried on doing her nails :-)

Are you cross with yourself because you didn't read the label?

I bought a pack of three different raspberry varieties from Wilko. The first to have a ripe fruit was Glen Ample and I was similarly disappointed. It is also the plant that may well have a virus, so it might be that affecting the taste. I'd be interested to know if anyone else is growing Glen Ample and finds it to have a good flavour.

On the other hand, I had my first raspberry from the Polka cane this evening and that was very good

IT could be the weather that has affected the taste - it's been so dry that mine aren't as tasty as usually. Some look like they have freeze dried on the plant.

I ate my first few Joan j and glen ample today (bare roots planted 18 months ago). I'd say the Joan j was nicer but I've only eaten about 2 of each and they were all pleasant.
