  • Lavender Help

I grew some lavender plants from seed last season; not really knowing what I was doing and to my shame I think I've given them root rot by over watering. The plucky wee devils are still trying to survive but I was wondering if there was anything further I can do to encourage them. My list of thing where I went wrong: Wrong soil composition, Too small a pot, Over watering. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well done for growing lavender from seed, something I've not succeeded at yet.
If you've corrected all the list of things you think you did wrong, then they should pick up and begin to thrive. Give them the sunniest spot you can, don't be tempted to feed them as they like quite poor soil and keep on the dry side. They'll be fine

Thanks Mothhawk, what I was concerned about was the amount of woody growth that was left after the defoiliage caused by the root rot. I didn't think the plants would recover. I've just brushed off the dead leaves and to be honest they look better now (if woody). Should I put them in better (more suitable) soil then or just leave them as is in the rather twiggy MPC?

I've don't use MPC so don't really know what its components are. I use john innes - seed compost for seeds, and JI number one for everything else. Lavender prefers soil on the alkaline limey side rather than acid.
I guess if the plants are recovering leave them be, or maybe re-pot half and see how they compare.
If there's nothing left but woody stems they may not re-grow, but if there are young green shoots showing they have a good chance.
