  • Small Shrivelled apples

My golden delicious apple tree usually has lots of nice apples but this year they have stopped growing they are about 1-2 cm they are not dry inside but look shrivelled the ground around the tree is not dry my other apple tree is doing fine the tree had more fruit on than usual but the June high winds have thinned it a little should I thin them more or just remove them they look normal inside but look like prunes outside

How does the rest of the tree look? Green, healthy leaves?

You may not be able to attach photos until you've made some more posts - sorry. Its one of the privileges that come with being a member for a while. Keep posting.

I'm sure someone will be along soon who understands fruit trees more than I do!

If they are shriveled they've had it, and it would be best to bin them. I'm not sure what the cause is - please keep some photos and when you are able to post them either resurrect this thread, or start a new one and I'll do my best to figure out what's wrong.

Shrivelled is a new one on me too Even unpollinated fruit should be firm on the tree , it may not be if it's been sitting on the ground for a week or so, especially in this weather.

Have you cut one open - Is there anything inside, has it rotted ?

Just an update I was out today to remove the shrivelled apples and they just dropped off but a lot of leaves are dropping as well
Could the very cold weather at the beginning of the year and the very wet weather since cause this
I’m hoping with a bit tlc it will survive

Inside the fruit looks normal but when I went to remove the fruit they all just dropped off when I touched them

Impossible to come up with a sensible diagnosis without a photo - the main problem I have round here now is lack of rain, so it sounds like you've had completely different weather to start with

Where do you live, CBART? Could that have a bearing on it?

Apples may have a dormant year.
I have 3 trees, not all will produce apples in large quantities, this will change from one tree to the next.
I'll have a bumper crop on one tree this year and only a small crop the next.
And I will always expect to have some shrivel and fall off.

Accept this year as the dormant year and watch what happens next season.

Can you see any damage to any branches or the main trunk?

Hi thank you for all your help
The trunk and branches look ok but the leaves are turning yellow and dropping I have removed all fruit so hopefully the tree can concentrate energy on itself rather than the fruit I have taken photos and when I’m allowed to add photos i will it might make it possible to diagnose the problem
