  • Bug ID Please?

Today has been a buggy day. In the morning, I found this little fellow on a strawberry plant.

And now, when I went to squash aphids on the dwarf raspberry (it's a never-ending battle, but I saw a ladybug on it yesterday so hope springs eternal), I saw these things on the underside of a couple of leaves.

What are these? Friends, foes, neutral? Should I squash them? Should I squeeze them and hug them and call them George?

Not sure about the first two but the third one is a hover fly larvae. Guard it with your life they eat huge numbers of green fly.

The first looks like a knot grass moth caterpillar Knot Grass Moths - Acronicta rumicis - UK Safari

      Endless wonder.

The first one might be brown-tail moth caterpillar, in which case it's eating your strawberry leaves. Handle with care, those hairs are nasty.

I think the second and third are larvae of different hover flies, in which case they are eating greenfly.

Hoverfly larvae?! Oh yayyyy! I'm doing my happy dance! Finally something that will eat those effing green vampires.

Having searched and studied images of brown-tail moth caterpillars and knot-grass moth caterpillars, I am leaning towards knot-grass. Either way, I guess I should move the little fella from the strawberries, right?

          Thank you so much, everyone!

            Photo 2 I think it's a hairstreak caterpillar but I don't which one.

SP, I searched for images of drinker moth caterpillars, but they seem brown while this fellow was black. I think knot grass looks most likely so far.

I also looked up hairstreak, and you might be right... I haven't seen any butterflies in my back garden, but I'd be pretty chuffed if they're laying eggs there! I mean, we have sawfly larvae by the millions on my gooseberry, so why not butterflies as well :P
