  • Jerusalem artichokes

My sister gave me 8 Jerusalem artichokes tubers so thought I would try growing them. Put them in a bed and they have now appeared. Any particular advice about growing them? Would upload a picture but can’t work out how to!

Don't put them in a bed mines in a bath.

They have a rep for being invasive as any tubers missed when harvesting will grow and produce new tubers. Next year as soon as you see any growing past where you want them dig em up.

They can get TALL so you may need to support them of even prune them back the 6 or 8 foot.

Keep them watered - not having enough water is how I actually killed my first lot off (in tubs)

Once they've died off for winter trim the stems to a foot or so long so you know where the plants were.

Introduce them to your diet slowly, a big hearty bowl of JA soup may taste wonderful but as a start to the season your body won't have adjusted and you (and the neighbours) will know about it. I learnt that lesson last autumn.

      P. S. They store best in the ground or if necessary in a container of compost in a cool place - only dig up what you need, popping one or two back into the harvested area. Any excess can be stored by burying them in a marked section of the bed. If you forget about them they just grow back and give you more next year - win.

When you've got a bumper crop they can be frozen to use in soups, stews and gratins.

Thanks. I did a clamp for storing potatoes last year and it worked well. Might do that if I get a lot. I take it I don’t need to earth them up ?

No need to earth up, also no need to worry about lifting and making a clamp. They will not be damaged by winter. Leave em in the ground with a portion of stalk attached to mark where they are and dig up when needed. If you're getting to the end of the winter and still have loads to get through dig em all up then freeze em, other wise they'll just start growing again and you'll be over run.
