  • Buying a new greenhouse: number of vents?

    Hi all,
I already have a 6 x 8 greenhouse and find that I am running out of space.

I am thinking of getting an 8 x 10 greenhouse. I found one in clearance but it has 2 roof vents and initial enquiries with the company state they don't have spare part roof vents for that model. Further research shows me that there are other 8 x 10 greenhouse brands/models with 4 vents but are more expensive of course.

Therefore, I am wondering if 2 vents is sufficient for air circulation in 8 x 10 greenhouse in south scotland?

My 6 x 8 greenhouse has one roof vent and I find that leaving this open along with the door in the summer provides adequate enough ventilation in the summer in south scotland.
Any advice would help in the decision making! Thanks, sam

Here in Kent I have 2 top windows in my 8 x 10 and most years it's fine - but if we do get a proper heat-wave (not often, is it? ) I just take the top pointy window out completely and put it back in when the weather cools down again.

I couldn't justify the extra expense of adding more windows, with my limited budget.

      Hi Sam and welcome
You can never have too many GHs so I have 5, various sizes between 6x10 to 12x10. All of them have 2 opening roof vents, (one each side) and a louvre window on the sunny side.
I have automatic openers on one of the roof vents and on one of the louvre windows.
I leave the door open when its warm enough and this seems adequate ventilation.

If you like it, and it fits well in the space available, then I'd say buy it whatever.

If you find ventilation a problem, even after opening the door and push comes to shove, then I'd say just take a pane of glass out completely - you could always substitute a piece of acrylic which looks much the same and is obviously easier to handle.
