  • Planting bare-Root Gooseberries

    Hello,
Have ordered some gooseberry bare roots
Any ideas on best methods to plant:
Should I dig large enough hole to accommodate roots and then backfill to create a mound and position the bare root on this with roots spread over mound?
or would it be okay just to pop it into hole without mound and backfill?
Should I add lots of compost and rake in some bonemeal or blood fish bone?
I also have some rotted manure, would this be best as a mulch or should I pop some in the planting hole too?
Any hints or tips most welcome!

Hi - I wrote a bit of a guide to planting trees and bushes as a post on here a few months ago, which you might like to have a look at.

re your query it partly depends one what your soil and site is like what the best plan will be - ie heavy, sometimes waterlogged or light and free-draining etc

Also given that its quite late in the season to be planting bare-root bushes, I'd be inclined to pot yours up in compost when it arrives, possibly with a plastic bag over it for a week or so, to make sure its growing to make sure its growing on OK before putting it out in the garden.

Finally feeding early on is not usually necessary, though there's no harm in adding some sort of slow release fertiliser, if the soil is poor.
