  • Green Manure

    Hello all!

I've had my plot 4 years now and I'm yet to add anything back into it apart from the natural waste and a bit of chicken poo.

I've just received my second son into the family, so the allotment is going to be very much going it alone for now. Has anyone any experience with green manures? I've ordered fenugreek and mustard. Do i literally just sow it on the ground and dig in when it suggests to?

Thanks a bunch. My plot is only dinky (8mx5m or so).

I bought a packet of a green manure and did just that. seemed to work (albeit I'm not growing veg there, so haed to see a yild change. I grew some on the veg plot last year, so we'll see this year. I also put bee-attracting flowers in to give them a break.

I wouldn't let it go over though... we have an infestation of poached-egg flowers (can't remember the proper name), which some people use as green manure. leave it for more than the time and it self-seeds vigorously...

AFAIK, when growing, mustard takes more nitrogen from the air than the soil but as soon as it flowers it starts using its' stored reserves, so chop it down before it flowers.

Some g. manures like peas, beans, lupins, clover ... can add extra nitrogen to the soils making it more fertile - others don't do this, but can improve soil structure and/or help to conserve the fertility that is already there by preventing it being washed away by rain.
