Frozen strawberry plants?

    Frozen strawberry plants?

    The water in my potted strawbs pots has probably frozen in the last few days. How likely is that to be fatal?

    (just as the poor things were starting to put out a few leaves too...)

    They should be fine Mike, Strawbs don't mind a cold spell.

      I hope so. We may not get very many, but the taste of fresh strawberries is a real perk of early summer.

      when I get a circular tuit, I will build a better bed for them. (they are on top of the shed to stop squirrels, birds, slugs, toddlers etc eating them)

        You're certainly OK with them there for stopping toddlers, possibly slugs too although they can and do climb. However, are you not aware that squirrels can both climb and jump, whilst birds can fly. A shed roof is little challenge to them

            I think I'm right in saying BM that strawbs don't just mind a cold spell, they need a period of vernalisation to encourage them to throw flowers which subsequently become the fruit.

              hehehehe! I'm more worried about toddlers! they get caught in nets... actually, the shedlet is by the back door which does seem to keep wildlife at bay (it also means they are usually sheltered by the heat of the wall, apart from this year)

                Most varieties are H6 hardy on the rhs rating so -15c to -20c
