I'd not noticed the packet sow by date Jack, is a bit odd they're usually only dated to the following year.
    Location....East Midlands.

Print error or Fothergills have lost the plot.

Seeds which are sealed in foil packets, packed dry, will keep much longer than packets that have been opened. It may be that the date on the back is the last date you should sow from an unopened packet. Many seed packets have a note on them saying that once the foil is opened normal ageing of the seed will begin.

I have successfully grown parsnips from a packet opened the previous year, with about 50% germination, but I wouldn't want to keep the seeds any longer than that.

If the seed is vacuum packed in foil, it will be ok.

Sowed parsnips last year from a packet that had been opened the year before. Germination was the best I had had!

Would have thought the temperature would also have an impact.

I think it means you have to sow them by just after twenty past eight...... Bit late now....

We always struggle with parsnips that are not new that year

Damn, beaten to it - lucky I checked all posts first ;-)

I've got some left from last year sown just over two weeks ago in kitchen roll tubes of compost, on a heated mat under a grow light - almost all of them are up already, far more than came up in the ground or a dustbin last year and far quicker.
