  • What's growing in my propagator?

Due to a multitude of issues and lack of free time, I haven't sown anything in my propagator yet. I spent some time a week ago sieving some compost, and then used it to fill some modules. I watered the capillary matting and set it all up. The only thing I needed to do was sow some seeds and add labels. Which I didn't get round to.

I had a look this morning and something's germinated already, after a week. No idea what it is or how it got to be there.

Whilst I can remove it, how do I know whether any germinated plants are veg seeds that I've sown or weeds or contaminants from elsewhere?

If you didn't sow it, its a weed. A photo would help with identification.

Difficult to say without a photo. But there's a fairly high chance it's a weed as you haven't sown anything yet. You have two opposition let it grow a bit and hope you can identify it or rip it out and pretend it never happened, carry on regardless

Weed (Noun) any wild plant that grows in an unwanted place, especially in a garden or field where it prevents the cultivated plants from growing freely.

I've since removed the offending weed and sown my seeds.

It looks a little bit like a member of the squash family, but it also could be a weed or flower seedling - hard to tell from just 2 seed leaves.

I thought it looked like a cucurbit too but it doesn't matter now as its been removed - so we'll never know.
