Hi Lardman,
It wasn't me that you were chatting with, but I'm interested in scions of pitmaston pineapple and winter nellis. I can either swap for scions of any of the ones I have listed below or send you an s.a.e., as you prefer.

Apples - Winter Nelis
Pears - Winston (Winter King)

Ideally I'd prefer to bud in summer. I'm within reach of Worcs. or Ross-on-Wye... depends how much the postage would be. I've quite a collection if anyone wants other grafting or budding wood:

20 apples - Laxton's Epicure, St. Edmund's Russet, Sunset, Norfolk Royal Russet, Jupiter, Holstein, Rubinette through to Captain Kidd, Rosemary Russet, Golden Russet, Crispin, Sturmer Pippin

12 pears - Doyenne d'Ete, Jargonelle, William's Bon Chretien, Fondante d'Automne, Beuure Superfin through to Doyenne du Comice, Baronne de Mello *, Nouveau Poiteau **, Glou Morceau, Josephine de Malines

Budding wood = a bit easier to post, and I do much more summer than winter pruning. Anyway ask if you need anything.

P.S. I forgot; sorry, I have Queen Cox as well if anyone wants scion wood. Only mentioning it because it does v. well for me and hasn't suffered from scab so far.

Does it get grafted onto root-stock or just planted as is and hope?

Grafted on to rootstock. It is also a sensible question when you don't know

(A scion is just a posh term for a cut bit of twig).

A scion is just a cutting taken from a tree of the variety in question. You could try to plant it directly into the ground, or a sand /compost mix, but the chances of cuttings 'taking' are very low for most varieties.

The usual way of using a scion is to graft it onto a root-stock to produce a new tree of the scion's variety. You can purchase root stocks for a pound or so from a few UK nurseries on the web. Alternatively, once you've bought a single root stock, you can start propagating your own root stocks in subsequent years using a stooling bed approach.

The other way of using a scion is to graft it on to an existing apple tree of a different variety. All subsequent growth made by the scion will be of the scion's variety. Hence you will produce a tree made up of two varieties. Scions of different varieties can be grafted onto a single apple tree to produce a tree on which each branch is of a different varieties.

Getting back to planting scions as cuttings, cuttings taken from root stocks such as MM106 and M26 actually root pretty well in my experience, usually with more than a 50% success rate.

I'll grab some later today for you. You can chip bud in spring, it's just not as successful - not that I have any success in summer doing it either.

A5 Jiffy bag and a large letter stamp - �1.50 should do for a goodly amount of pencils.

I'd prefer to bud in summer, please. (Mid to late July is the best time usually.)

Grafting's done in spring because it produces a tree a full year earlier than budding in mid summer.

However, it's more time-consuming.

Anyone needing the varieties I listed, pls just say, either wood for grafting now/soon or wood for budding later.
