    Asparagus

    I've done it, I've gone and brought myself some young asparagus crowns. After talking about it for 3 years . I've heard rumours that it doesn't grow well up here. So was wondering would they grow if planted in very large tubes ? Would they do better in a cooler polytunnel rather than exposed to the elements.
    I have planted asparagus up here in raised beds for someone else and they seemed to do well in their first year. But don't know how they did after that ( job change ).
    So all advice needed.

    What is the average summer temperature and rain fall in Mull SP, I planted some asparagus roots four year ago, and have been very disappointed in the results, I am doing away with it now, the Garnock Vally average temp. is 16c with 5hrs sunshine, rains about 16 days in the month, (the other 15 days are cloudy) so if you plant it in a Polly tunnel with plenty of compost worked into the soil, I think it should do ok, any way you will never know till you try
    it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

      Thanks Rary I know it's a risk, but got to give it a go. like you say don't know, if you don't try and the crowns weren't expensive, so not a huge problem if they don't come to anything.
      couldn't tell you how many days per month it rains ( most of them I think ). We had 114" last year

          Thanks for this. I never new that asparagus was temperature reliant. My (now sadly departed) allotment neighbours plants always seemed to flourish outdoors?

            Can I ask what variety you brought ?
            That is a lot of rain, would need very good draining site if outside as they hate wet feet, I know that from here at an average of 35" year

              I'll let you know when it turns up. I think it's a case of you get what you're given, it is very cheap

                Mine's doing fine in Edinburgh... this will be it's third season, so hoping for a harvest! I'm on heavy clay but I added a lot of organic matter and dug a big drainage trench round the bed. Temperatures here probably aren't optimum, but still adequate I think - it's not like there's fruit that needs to ripen.
