  • Bulbs/Plants to grow around comfrey for winter interest (and use?)

    Hi all

I have planted Comfrey Bocking 14 in various spots around my garden, including the front bank of the house. Now that it has all died back for winter, it is looking somewhat bare and unattractive. I was wondering if it would it be possible to plant bulbs or something similar around the Comfrey that would give some ground cover and interest at this time of year. I was thinking possibly snowdrops or maybe primroses. I live in the countryside so would prefer something in-keeping and not too fancy and would love something that could have a use.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

    Many thanks

I think primroses would be smothered by the comfrey foliage in the summer, as they don't die down.

Early flowering bulbs include aconites, snowdrops, scilla and anemone blanda, but I'm not sure any of these are edible.

I have Daffs and Bluebells in my comfrey patch and they are coming up all ready, I like the early colour and it makes me smile each time I visit the allotment

Would rosemary be good or lavender? As they're evergreen rather than bulbs

Many thanks for the suggestions, some of which I have heard of and others not... It is great to have some new ideas.

I think we will stick with bulbs rather than evergreen, as I think the comfrey will completely take over the patch in the growing months... Just so something so that it doesn't look so bare and rank throughout the winter months.

Spring flowering bulbs would be best as they die back completely after flowering. You can cut back the comfrey without damaging them.
