  • Black rock hens in Middlesbrough/North East area!

Admin, hope this is ok, appologies if not!

After owning some black rock hens a few years ago and getting loads of eggs off them, even when they were 5 and 6 years old, I have decided to get some more.
The problem is that genuine black rock hens only come from one place in the uk and there aren't any agents around this area.
I have been in touch with muirfield hatchery and Eddie (the owner) has said he will meet me and drop some off on his next delivery from Scotland to down south.
To make it worthwhile for him, I wondered if anyone else within travelling distance of Middlesbrough was interested in any, they are £12 each for 12 week old chicks and probably the best egg laying hens you can get, very friendly pets as well.
I won't be buying any to sell, if anyone is interested they can pay the money to Eddie directly and either meet him the same time/place as me or can collect from me if that's easier.
Please post if you may be interested!!

Nice offer - £12 is very good, though just remember that 12 week old chicks may need supplementary heat in this weather, a separate run and coop to your original flock and a growers pellet rather than a layers feed.

That said, I would love a few! Shame I'm not closer

Eddie advised that as long as they have a sheltered coop and the door closed on cold nights the 12 week old ones should be fine, he could supply 8 week ones at £9 each but they would need extra heat.
My coop is empty at the moment so am starting from fresh, coop been washed down with a stuff I got from the vets to stop any disease from old ones.
I will feed them on what they are already used to at first and then probably go onto growers pellets or growers crumb, whichever I can get hold of.

I've had Black rocks several times - but not from Scotland.
There are agents all over the UK including Swindon, Scarlet. Approved Agents for Muirfield Black Rock chickens | Muirfield Black Rock Chickens

Mine came from Pen Rhiw Garn Poultry Supplies

After ringing the 4 closest ones on that website today with no luck, Eddie that runs the website and hatchery informed me that it needs updating and there are currently no agents within 50 miles, none that have any stock within 100 miles.
That's the reason he is willing to go out of his way to get them to me, can't beat that for customer service.

Just a quick update, got 8 poults ordered at 12 weeks old upto now, will be in the new year before they will be delivered so still plenty of time to show interest.

Hi Ya, I was wondering if you had taken delivery of your hens yet Griff? I mentioned to my Brother in law who keeps a few chucks and he found a place in east anglia who does them and I believe is going to get some aftre I told of him of your saying they are good layers. When he told me I thought of you and wondered if they had arrived. Good luck.
