  • Our own personal seed banks

Today I’ve been going through my seeds to see what I need to get and what I have.

Does anyone else have seed for 4 different varieties of dandelions ?

I’ve enough Kale seed to fill every bed. Twice.
I can sow lettuce every week and not sow the same variety for over 3 months.
I can grow a spinach forest using spinach and plants used as spinach substitutes - including plants up to 8 foot tall.
There’s an entire drawer dedicated to plants sown in February. Most of these can be sewn in April as well. April has three quarters of a drawer to itself.

Now I have to figure out what I need to buy.

How's your own seed hoard going?

      Don't know where to start

I'm going through my seeds at the moment, sorting each type into "when to sow" month.
I've done Cabbages, caulis, sprouts and probably some more I've forgotten.
All the really old seeds or opened packets are being poured into a jam jar - one each for brassicas, alliums, roots or salad leaves. These are being scattered in the GH beds at the mo. They'll be in random beds come spring.

My "plan" is to shuffle all the Roots/shoots/fruits and leaves (R,S, F & L) envelopes around so that all the January sown Roots etc seeds will be together.

Since R,S,F & L will be sown in one week in four, I won't have to wade through each type of veg each week for suitable seeds.

I'm sure this is as clear as mud but I know what I mean, and that's what matters

Veggy seeds = hobby = I want them!
Flower seeds = business = I neeeeeeeeeeed them, honest, I do!!!

I don't feel quite so bad now as I only have an old 'carry on' size suitcase for all my seeds.
It sounds as if I am quite restrained in my buying, compared with you lot

I have undergone therapy, so now I don't keep many seeds only about 200 packets now

Not counted packets but looking through my box I'm only short of parsnip seeds for next year. Odd how there's never any parsnip seeds amongst those we get from the GYO mag.

None of my seed is old, had a big clear out and binned the stuff more than a year old, I buy seed every other year, using half in each year only adding new varieties, passing on anything I don't want, usually as seedlings to neighbours.

Oh, ok as VC has shown us a smidgy glimpse of hers. Here is mine and I am still over the moon with my veg filing system (thank you VC not all your ideas are completely barmy )

Top shelf is veg. Below that is flowers, seeds to be filed and various bits and bobs. Below that is just my share of the VSP.

                            Very tidy, NG
Most of my video boxes are in the 4 plastic trays on the top shelf, split into, would you believe, Roots, Shoots, Fruits and Leaves.
Peas and beans, toms, kale, squashes and carrots are in big boxes on the floor!
Still work in progress but its summat to do in the dark evenings
