  • My first allotment

    Hi all,

Last week I finally got my first ever allotment plot. Apart from growing a few tomatoes in the garden I have very little experience, but fortunately my elderly next door neighbour who has had plots in the past is willing to teach me everything he knows and give me a hand. I'm really keen to get started but as the days are fairly short at the moment I only really have the weekends. Here is what the plot currently looks like:

The previous holder had the plot for many years and when I visited in the summer it was very productive. Initial plans are to rat proof the pallet compost bin (top left), make an area for some leafmould, and build a wooden trellis to grow some beans. In the future we plan to add at least one raised bed, and eventually we'd like a small shed to sit and enjoy a tea/beer in, and perhaps a greenhouse.

We're on a bit of a budget though so everything will be scaveneged or obtained from eBay, Gumtree or Freecycle.

    Hello and welcome.

Looks like you're on to a winner: nice, productive plot that isn't full of weeds and assorted other rubbish. And a keen volunteer to provide advice and a hand. Bet you both have lots of fun.

Hope you have a jolly and fruitful time of it.

Hi Plot5 and welcome to the Grapevine

Great plot, looks ready to plant - maybe some onions, garlic, broad beans or overwintering peas for an early crop next year. Its always nice to see something in the ground, even if it doesn't grow much through the winter months.

Welcome. Looks like you've got a wonderful plot to start with.

You'll find plenty of ideas on how to do things cheaply or free in the allotment forum and the undercover forum.

I love reading the allotment forum. I can't imagine the level of commitment required to keep one going year in, year out.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes - it's always a good sign to see plenty of replies to a topic throughout the day as it means I can have a cheeky look while I'm at work! Hope to see you all in the other threads where I will no doubt be asking some stupid questions.
