Birds maybe? They always seem to eat the yellow crocus here.

There are some really tiny snails about & I think birds have pulled at my yellow dahlias,there's sometimes a group of petals on the grass. For earwigs you could set a trap next to the flowers affected,there's info online about putting a little bowl with olive oil in it,but cover from hedgehogs/pets,then the next morning there should be earwigs in the bowl.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions, I think I'll set up an earwig trap and see if I catch any. Regarding slugs or snails I would have thought I may have seen damage to leaves or stems - perhaps the flowers are more tasty

Let us know if you solve the mystery,I had no damage to my melon leaves but there was a tiny snail on the actual melon,I squashed it in my fingers because it was in an awkward position & I didn't want to drop it in the straw,a few days/weeks later there was another one,they were there being greedy during the daytime,usually slugs/snails appear at night. Good luck with finding the cause,last year earwigs ate my corn silks,I found a big fat one when I was harvesting them,I did nothing about it & this year no earwigs ate my corn silks,I think it was the position I had my corn was right next to my shed & they like damp wood,this year they were away from the shed with dry surroundings?)
