  • Could anyone identify this plant please?

    Hello,

I'd like to identify this plant before I dig it up, it's on my allotment, it's quite big, I've got my wellington in one of the photos just for scale.

I couldn't upload the photos here so I uploaded them to imgur.com, the links are below,

Thanks for looking, Kind regards, Dave

The flowers look like a member of the carrot family (Apiaceae or Umbelliferae ) but the leaves do not. Are you sure those flowers belong to the leaves in the photos, or are they from the plants growing alongside?

        Leaves look wrong for Hogweed?

'''Tis cow parsley. Get all the root out or it will regrow!

It's leaves are similar to parsnips but they have yellow flowers. It's definitely in that family of plants which has many members. Some like parsnips, carrots, parsley, dill, coriander, fennel and angelica have edible roots, leaves or seeds. Others like Hemlock are poisonous. The leaves of parsnip and giant hogweed can give you nasty burns.

I think yours could be common hogweed, also known as cow parsnip, but I'm not going to say for certain. It can be quite variable in appearance. It's not edible and its leaves can possibly give you burns. It's nowhere near as bad as giant hogweed, and I'm sure I've touched it before without any problems, but best to wear gloves when handling it. The plant I know as cow parsley is similar but generally smaller with more finely divided leaves.

Its Hogweed - I've been digging it out in my garden. If I could grow parsnips the size of the roots I'd be happy.
Even if you can't dig all the roots out, make sure that you don't let it seed as it spreads everywhere.
I keep the sap away from my skin as it does irritate and always wear gloves and cover my arms when I'm clearing it. Hate the stuff.

Another vote for hogweed and for not getting it onto your skin.
