  • Pathetic Mint

Well I just don't understand why my apple mint, usually rampant, is growing so pathetically in all 3 pots, (one very deep) in good compost fed occasionally with chicken manure and kept moist. The leaves previous years used to be big but now grow tiny

I would remove the bottoms from the pots and plunge them into soil, that way the roots can find extra food and won't get any over/under watering stress.

Can't see any mint leaves but I can see some weeds. Are you sure there's mint in there!

I would say you need to split it. Every year in late autumn I unpot my and replant 3/4 stolons in a big pot by the spring I have a pot full.

I did split it into smaller plants, 3 pots.

Take a plant and pull it apart then take 3/4 of the big white roots and replant only those and bin the rest. It sounds drastic but it works. If you just split the plant and replant it you are planting a lot of old roots and they will only produce small leaves. If you now have three plants try it with one and you will see the difference. By the end of spring you will have a pot full of mint.

Here you are. Are. This is what I meant by planting only a small bit of root. By the end of the summer the pot will be over crowded and that's a 12 inch pot!

You put three in, I put one.
What ever Marbs, your mint is considerably over Crowded & IS GROWING TOO WELL
Feed the soil, not the plants.
