  • Stalled asparagus

My asparagus came up strong in April, nearly all the crowns I planted last year sent up one or two nice healthy spears... but that was it! Since then it had sent up nothing, and the spears had turned into ferns and flopped over onto the bed.
However, as they looked sorry for themselves and were lying all over the paths around the bed and generally getting in the way, a couple of weeks ago I decided to stake them. Since doing this, they've started sending up more spears - is this a coincidence, or does the growth come in 'waves'?

Seems a bit strange...but so too has the weather!
The traditional last day for picking is midsummer's day....(or 6 weeks from the first cutting.)

Well if the last day for cutting is today, I would have had about 15 spears for the year... not great!

Ours had an earlier than usual flush then the spears slowed right down so we stopped cutting about three weeks ago. Others on site were the same so it looks like a weather thing.

Our Asparagus has done well Bario, though slowing down now and waiting to collect the seeds that are forming

24 plants this is their second season, so I haven't been cutting.

                Ah.
                Possibly concentrating on roots?
Bet next year will be brill!.

I wonder if they are confused as to the season...like fruit trees flowering again in the summer?

My one year crowns are very variable, this years from seed doing great
Does any one use miracle grow or similar to help fern growth and so increase root mass in the autumn ?

Seaweed and sand are the professional's choice apparently.

                      Thanks Nicos
Loads seaweed here, but had read it can contain technetium 99 (radio active beta emitter)

Thanks Nicos, in the end I put a liquid seaweed extract on them, but have found out beech seedweed is ok around here from test results, so will do that this winter

Bario1 how are they now looking. Ive found tying them up with canes seems to induce more fern spears to come. They vary now from 1.5m tall at best, at worst nearly zero

They really got second wind after I staked them, and they've thrown up many more shoots/ferns - I'm still seeing new ones coming up all the time. Hopefully they're building a mammoth root system under there and I'll get enough next year to take a small crop. I'll be adding another thick seaweed mulch once they've died down a bit.

                              Thanks Bario
Below some pics of where they are at here. As Im one year behind you and others wondering what one should expect in fern size. The tallest are 1.5m and the worst zero ie no show.
Would say my Ginjilm ones from seed planted in Dec are best on average and only 8 months old but guess disease free, no transplant shock. The worst are the 2 year old Ginjilm crowns I brought
