  • Sugar snap peas

    First time I've grown these, which are in a pot in the greenhouse, how do you eat them as mange tout or do I get a bit of patience and let 'em ripen a bit lol.

    You can eat them as mangetout but I leave them to get a bit fatter before I eat mine. Then you'll notice how thick (in a good way!) the edible pods are

      I'm growing bijou sugarsnap peas for the first time this year and I'm forcing myself to hold off till they fatten up - they're monstrously large already.
      Another happy Nutter...

        Don't let the Bijou fatten up! They are mangetout peas and have to be eaten while the pods are still flat, or they will be very stringy.



        Sugarsnap peas are very different as they grow thick pods (similar to runner beans)

            Sugarsnaps are my FAVOURITE! I like them big and juicy, just before they turn to proper peas. Yum

                I always grow Bijou and, as Thelma says, you need to eat them thin, big but thin!
                I picked some today and found one lurking in the undergrowth swollen like a balloon, with peas inside!
                The skin of the pod doesn't get thicker, as a sugarsnap does.

                  Maybe I should try sugarsnap peas. I don't much go for mangetouts, I find them a bit slimy (sorry if that's too much TMI). Anyone got any sugarsnap recommendations?

                    Sugar Ann is ok if you don't mind picking short peas.

                    I'm still trying to get a good tall sugarsnap tbh. I got some from an American supplier, but the seed isn't true, as they aren't all fat podded So this year I'm seed saving from the good plants, trying to build up a stock of seed.

                      Sugar Magnolia and Magnolia Blossom Tendril peas are both tall, tasty sugarsnaps. Sugar magnolia is purple podded, though the purple colour isn't 100% stable.

                      I prefer sugar snaps to pretty much any other pea.

                        Thanks, guys. Those look quite exotic, Sparrow! To be honest, though, I might do better with Sugar Ann as my plot is very exposed.

                              I'm trying a few different types this year so I'll report back - I normally grow sugarsnap (that is a variety too) and suspect they'll still be my favourite - although none of them are doing well at the moment!
