  • Seed Germination

How long does it take seeds to germinate , so I know if I have to resow.

Its my first time growing from seed and I am little scared yesterdays hail storm may of destoryed my chances

It depends on the seeds. Different for each variety/veg you grow. It usually tells you on the packet Tarragon but I would only use it as a guide as it depends on the conditions they are growing in.

As dynamite has said, it depends on what your were sowing. What did you sow?
Chillies can take weeks, lettuce can be up in a few days. If you are scared that the weather has scuppered your chances sow some more in pots as back ups.

Just how long is that piece of string? Not all seed packs give the germination period but have you looked at the back of the pack?

Typical the lack of germination time is one thing I hate and believe it should always be in the back of the packs. Generally looking at the backs of packs I have used in the past as I scan and keep the instructions

              Carrots - 14 - 21 Days
Spring Onions 14 - 21 days although I have had them sooner

I generally start to get impatient at 2 weeks. Some Summer Brocolli I sowed 4 days ago are showing as small seedlings, bit surprised.

Carrots can be a bit slow, spring onions you may get a few then nothing then a few more, then nothing then a few more. They are annoying. Also the germinate but can be difficult to see - small, thin and dark green.

As said 2 weeks seems reasonable but that is a sort of ball park figure. After 2 weeks you are allowed to swear at them. May not help much but sometimes you feel better.
