  • Squash Spacing

I was wondering whether anybody has tried growing trailing squash varieties a bit closer together than the recommended 90cm? I've just transplanted a few today without measuring and think they might be a bit close. Is it worth moving them?

Its the trailing bits that need space, more than how close they're planted. Have you room to space out the vines?

I *think* the vines will have enough space. The butternuts I've grown before and theirs don't get too big. However, I haven't tried the others before so I'm not sure! I'm growing Harlequin, festival, spaghetti and crown prince. I'm guessing crown prince will be a bigger plant overall as the fruits are bigger?

Can you put canes in and grow some up them? I "think" I've grown Harlequin & Festival as climbers.

That's a great idea, I'll look into that. I've got some tall twirly metal canes I could use too :-)

I always plant them closer - I have 9 plants in a four foot square bed - but I'll allow the vines to trail beyond the bed. I find they're quite good for suppressing weeds.
