  • planting herbs together?

    Hi All,

I have just bought a variety of herbs to plant, Sage, Thyme, Mint, Oregano, Lavender to name a few, I am planning on putting them in a raised bed,

are there any that should not be put together and which ones should be contained to reduce spreading?

    Thanks very much

Mint and lemon balm need to be contained otherwise they'll have a jolly good romp around the bed.

I've bunged lots into a small bed - thyme, oregano, chocolate mint, chervil, tarragon, feverfew and a couple more. I'm hoping to get a profusion of different herbs but will keep cutting back the choc mint. I inherited garden mint already running wild so a few extra wild profusions will be fine!

That's great thanks for your replies! I think i may put the mint and lemon balm in containers before putting them in the bed, what size pots would suffice?

        Thanks again!

Perhaps you could split off part of the raised bed with a deep barrier - like a slate - and plant the mint and lemon balm there?

Or cut the bottom put of a large container and Bury that so the plants can still draw up water but the roots are constrained.

I've yet to figure out where I'm putting mine. I read one website that warned a liquid feed made of either lemon balm or mint (pepper mint?) suppressed seed germination. If that worked it would be a great way to avoid weeding. Probably never get round to properly trying it though.

P.s. Pot size will ultimately depend 9n how much you want to grow. Another name for lemon balm is bee balm as they love it.

I didn't realise there was so many different types of mint, do they all actually smell like what they are named after?

I may have to get some to add to my herb collection :-)
