Jerusalem artichokes

    Jerusalem artichokes

    I planted, my first try, some Jerusalem artichokes about a month ago and yes the weather has been quite cold but still no sign of anything emerging. Do they usually take a long time to emerge or are they rotting in the ground do you think?

    No real idea as this is the first real time I'm growing them (killed them offers time).

    Mine are up but they are in a bath and two buckets which may have helped. How well drained is the bed they are in?

    Where abouts in the country are you? I put mine in at the end of March.

      Thanks for your answer. I am near Brussels, Belgium. They are in an allotment garden.
      I actually have a strange-looking weed coming up in one spot where they were planted, could that be a JA?

        Do you have a photo of the plant? Can you describe them?

        JAs leaves have two leaves opposite each other on the stems alternating - e.g first two leaves are at the front and back, next two left and right and so on. They are pinnate (sort of spear head shape)

            They do resemble weeds have a look here :-

              OK thanks for your answer. So you put yours in at the end of March, so there is still some hope for me. I think I put mine in a bit later.

                  That weed looks very much like an artichoke, you may live to regret growing them(even though I grow them).
                  I doubt you will ever remove all of them from that bed ever again.
                  Feed the soil, not the plants.

                      It MAY be a JA but it's hard to tell from such a blurry image - can you get a better photo?

                        But a better photograph would, I am sure, prove it without doubt.

                          A clearer photo would help, how does yours compare to those in the link I posted?

                              My plant does not look much like the photograph you posted Bren. I will post another picture tomorrow.
                              I actually dug up one to see what was happening. It is still intact and only just starting to sprout (and much firmer than when I bought them as they were a bit soft at the time).
