Anyone any experience on this ?

I could buy an out the box one.
Or build my own ( I am a bit techky !)

I would like to water from a garden waterbutt so probably need a pump of some kind.

Anyone any ideas , comments or experience in this area.

    Thanks
    Jimmy

I use a micro irrigation system off a waterbutt. I used a bought system (its about 6 years old now) but I noticed there are lots of drippers available now so I guess it would be simple to make one of your own. My waterbutt lasts a couple of days.

I also bought an automatic watering system last year with a timer off the outside tap. It works, does what it says on the tin but I wouldn't bother again as it was really relatively expensive and not as good quality as I expected from the supplier (I had to spend several days tweaking the pressure at the tap otherwise it blew apart despite having a "pressure reducer" in the kit and other annoyances).

I have an old dripper system tubes etc. So I was thinking of a timer to switch on a small pump to pump water from the butt for a short period, to be defined. I don't think I need one of those £300 pumps , I sort of wondered if a small fishpond pump would suffice.

I have 2 systems in the polytunnel, firstly a soaker hose that connects to the tap which is great for a splurge if it's needed. For day to day use I have a gravity fed system with a low pressure dripline so no pump is required- I can't find the original manufactures/supplier but it looks very similar to this blue pipe-it has built in drippers however I didn't buy a kit:
              https://www.watermateirrigation.co.u...stem-p174.html

What I don't like about it is that the drips are every 30 or 45cm or so and I would like something more flexible. I have been considering this for some time now:
              https://www.tankfedirrigation.com/30...nsion-drip-kit
Which creates more flexibility but they put the price up in January from £30 odd to £46 and as I would need two of them I simply can't justify it. I don’t need the full kit that this attaches to, I could make the extension work.

My system is attached to an IBC tank via a simple battery operated timer. The IBC is just higher than the inside height of the tunnel which creates enough head of pressure. A standard water butt takes what, about 200 litres? That's 28 litres of water per day available for a week. Admittedly the water butt’s would benefit from some additional height, say breeze blocks or something or connect 2 butts together which gives 200 litres or so at 30 or 40cm height.

Hose pipe with holes drilled in it. Fed by a raised water butt and a battery operated timer.

my GH self watering from a butt. the ballcock didnt quite work out (technical stuff) so at the moment its rigged from the main water butt and the water drips thru the ballcock keeping the container at a constant level. in the pipework ive added at T juction with a pipe sticking up so i always know the water level and itll never put too much water in, itll overflow there first. is a good way to add liquid feed too. ill replace the ballcock and box with a smaller box and no ballcock to save more GH space.

so far have had all cucumber plants (around 8) growing strong, several pepper plants and chilli plants at head height. works well.
