  • 2017 - Grow Salad with me Challenge

Did you think I'd forgotten to set you a new Challenge for 2017?
The aim is to to be able to eat a salad every week of the year. It doesn't matter what is in it (as long as you've grown it) Photos of your salad would be nice! We like photos

This year I'll be sowing a little pot of radish and a tiny pinch of mixed salad leaves every week until its warm enough to sow outdoors.
    Do you remember the http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...5-a_83072.html
    Something on these lines!

I have salad and radish growing the greenhouse - it's (lettuce) is only 'small snippings' size just now but tastes lovely. Too dark for pictures at time of post, will return later with one.

                Love this challenge

I shall be growing several varieties of salad crops, but not just yet, not enough daylight hours. Once the onions and leeks are out of the propagator, then some salads will be going in.

OK I'm in usually I feed my need to sow and grow by growing cress indoors, but as I could grow salad for toffee last year for some reason, I'm going to have a bash in my mini Ikea greenhouse that lived behind the patio doors in the kitchen

I'm up for his challenge! This year to try and avoid slugs eating my salad I have rigged up some shelving in the greenhouse. What I need are some sturdy trays - you know like the ones you used to have at school that you pulled out and kept all of your pencils etc in? I'm going to try sowing successional-ly so we always have some on the go. Not got anything to sow yet as haven't got anything to sow them in but the idea is there!
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!

                            Nearly lunch time

Clockwise from the top - lettuce Warpath (mini iceberg variety), baby carrots (Flyaway), corn salad, a few red tinged lettuce leaves from a mixed lettuce pack, beetroot Boltardy, chinese celery, mibuna, Sungold tomatoes and microgreens (radish Sangria, cress and choy sum).

Now all I have to do is decide between chicken and sardines. Chicken I think.

This week's salad (I may have more than 1!)

Clockwise from top - pea shoots, 2 mini lettuces, cress, baby choy sum, corn salad, chinese celery, Shirley tomatoes, mibuna and a small snackbite orange pepper.

The corn salad, chinese celery and mibuna were grown outside, the pea shoots, lettuces and choy sum in the grow light garden, the pepper and cress on the windowsills and the tomatoes were picked green from the greenhouse and ripened indoors.

Here it is ready to eat, with added tuna mayonnaise and home made bread:
