    Coronet Red Devil

    Does this apple tree really exist?

    It is currently advertised in this month's Grow Your Own and Kitchen Garden as a giveaway:

    In Kitchen Garden, it said you can buy them in Wyevale and both magazines give the Coronet url and say you can mail order. So off I went to two Wyevale garden centres over the weekend and neither of them have it. I then visited the Coronet website and they don't list it.

    I'm beginning to think that this is an April fool and that this apple tree is a myth. It sounded ideal for my garden as it's small, disease resistant and the apples sounded delicious. Has anyone else tried to buy one of these or could tell me where to get one? Also, bizarrely the Coronet website says they do mail order between November and March only!

    It exists and is newish to the market (the Red Devil was bred roughly 30 years ago), grows up to 3m. Coronet is the style of the growth, the apple is Red Devil, a cross between a discovery and a kent apple. Supposedly bleeds pink juice and tastes mildly of strawberries.

      Thanks Andrew. Strangely, not a lot came up when I google on it. Apparently Garden Answers is doing a giveaway on them as well though.

      Maybe I should just enter all the competitions and hope that I win one as I'm having no joy sourcing one to buy.

        You can buy Red Devil from a few nurseries, it is a specialist trree, suggest you just google Red Devil Apple tree and see what you come up with.

            Probably not much use but if you're ever in Ireland this little apple tree is very popular in the garden centers. I know because I just bought a 5 year old last weekend.
            I got mine here: www.hosfordsgardencentre.ie

            But I've spotted them in a few others too.

              Hi Johnoc & welcome to the vine. I won a Coronet Red Devil tree from a magazine last year & it came from a company in Ireland as you say, I think maybe it was developed over there. It's in a large pot & has quite a few tiny apples on it at the moment, it's dropped a few but I'm hoping it won't lose too many more in 'June drop' as I'm looking forward to trying them.

                In which case they only dispatch bare rooted trees, which can only be lifted while dormant!
