  • Moving plots

There has a plot come available on our allotment site that I am considering of swooping.

Only question is the plants that I have planted and are growing can they be transferred over? or will it die if I move them?

Depends on the plants really - what have you got planted that you want to take with you? When do you have to move (soon I imagine)?

Moving things like cabbage or brussels that are well established and tall is likely to fail (but trying is better than giving up).
Large root crops too like carrots or parsnips will have a reasonable failure rate.
Fruit bushes, trees, strawberries and the like are more likely to survive.

The size of the rootball, the amount of moisture content and the condition of the planting hole will all have a bearing on the success.

You are likely to leave some big holes behind unless you put soil from the planting holes back.

Take your compost with you and if you can't take all the plants, consider making them into mulch/compost for the new plot.

I've moved plot and didn't regret it at all. Best time to move fruit would be when they are dormant. Can to negotiate starting on your new plot before giving up the old plot? Then you can get things ready, even as digging the planting holes for a seamless transition.

I'm sure they'll let you have a crossover period to get organised - we're rapidly approaching the end of the season so its likely to be a good time to move. I've transplanted all sorts of things with no problems - as everyone else has said, it depends what you're wanting to move!

Good luck with it though - I think you should do it! Even if you have some failures, you can try again over at the new plot

I want to move herbs, flowers, fruit bushes and tomatoes that aint turned red yet. I will have to leave my cabbages and broccoli for the new plot holders. The plot is available at the end of Sept. There aint much work to be done on there apart from weeding. Most of the beds are covered in black plastic.

As for the plot that I have now, the only reason for moving is because it is very water logged. The other one is not.

We have decided to move plots. The guy before us wants us to buy the greenhouses from him. There are two.

Going to sort it all out on Monday.

Generally herbs should be ok... some are tougher than others though. Fruit bushes - big root ball should mostly have a good chance.
I'd pick the Toms at the last moment and ripen on windowsill - plants would be very likely to commit hari-kari if you tried moving them (imho).
It's a pretty good time of. Year to move I'd say.
                Good luck

                    Thanks.

I feel sorry for the next people who take over the plot I am giving up for another one. There is a lot of things need to be done on there, even tho I have done what I can do on it.
