  • What's happening to my toms

Had the pleasure of my very first tomato today but the next one on the vine looks like it's split
What is the cause of this please?

It's usually due to erratic watering.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?

It's can caused by incorrect watering, heavily watering them after letting them dry out. Also, certain varieties are more prone to split than others.

Yep I'd go with watering to, allowed go dry then heavily watered, then the fruit swells to quickly for the skin to accommodate it.

Try to keep the roots evenly moist all the time.

When I grew tomatoes in pots in the greenhouse they often split. Since I started planting them in the ground 2 years ago I haven't had one split tomato. I could not manage to keep the pots evenly watered.

I only get to water them once a day

Once a day should be enough. Could just be really ripe?

I didnt have one last year and have had loads this year. I do confess to largely inadequate watering this year, but I think the erratic weather hasnt helped either!

I've roasted most of my split ones as when I cut them in half they looked fine!
