  • Carrots no show yet

I sowed some carrots (from new Aldi seed packet ) on the 18th April in my new square foot raised bed. All through the cold period it has had a cloche over it but so far it has produced zero seedlings. is there still time as I am not experienced with carrots as failed in the past to get crops. No slug or snails on the bed.

    Thanks

They can take up to 3 ish weeks to germinate and last weeks cold days may of held them back even further.

I have a tendancy to sow mine too deeply which has also caused failure. Do you have the space to try another row? What variety are they?

Mine were sown at about he same time and nothing showing yet. Expect something soon though.

Not sure how you can guarantee no slugs or snails though, I often think I've banished them from the greenhouse and then find a big fat one lurking somewhere!

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

        The variety is "Jennette".

Sorry, I could have posted this in another carrot germination thread which I have only just noticed.

Give them a bit more time. My Nantes Frubund Fastcrop, which is a fast growing variety, sown on 7th April didn't germinate until 29th.

If it's any consolation, I sowed some carrots in March & have not germinated.............sow some more...........

Me too BM, quick question though, I made some carrot mats like your good self do things tend to take longer to germinate when sowing by this method? Never done it before, cheers

Good question MrsW, I would expect them to take a little longer but have not compared so I can't give a definite answer.

The ones I sowed at the end of March have just appeared! I was on the point of resowing.

It gives me hope to read all these other folk who are having the same issues. I will wait it out for a bit longer and sow again. Just want to see these beds thriving. Probably the excitement of new raised beds in square foot. The radish are doing well though

                      How old are the seeds?
If get rubbish results if I try and sow anything older than last year's.
                      Just a thought.

You are well ahead of me Marb.
I have sown absolutely nothing apart from chillies back in February.
Even the spuds are still chitting in the kitchen!

Hopefully over the next few days we'll be able to sow our radish and carrots, and other things.

Good news about the radish, Marb
Everything seems slow this year - hopefully a spell of decent weather will warm the soil enough for seeds to germinate. Fingers crossed

I sowed mine on April 10th, and they've only just started showing.

Most of the umbelliferae (carrots, parsnips, parsley, celery etc) are pretty slow to germinate and patience is required. The cold shot of weather won't have helped either.
