  • Is tonight the night?

    Hi all

I've been bringing my tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers out every morning to unheated greenhouse and back in every night. However, I think tonight might be the night they stay out and live there permanently now.

Weather forecast is here Staines-Upon-Thames May Weather 2016 - AccuWeather Forecast for Surrey United Kingdom

Would anyone else do the same as I plan to?

    Cheers

    Hello Dave,
I'm further up (down?) the Thames than you and haven't even sown my cucumbers yet! One cold evening and they'll be gone!
Tomatoes will be okay...some of mine have been in the u/h greenhouse for a week,.
Courgettes I'm not sure of...its a bit of a gamble...but if they are strong and hearty it might be worth a go? Mine are only just hatching in the heated prop.

ps, I'm not a terribly good gardener...just an enthusiastic one. So this is a friendly opinion rather than expert advice

I'm considering the same thing sometime this week. I'm a little farther north than you! My courgettes are already in my polytunnles permanently (that's where they began life). I'm very torn on the issue.
Sorry not been any help. Just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one having crazy thoughts

All my toms, sweet peppers and chilli's are out in the garden as I type and were there yesterday as well.

The toms all went into the unheated shed overnight and the peppers were in the kitchen as it is closest to the back door.

However, don't take my word for it that all my plants will survive as like Muddled I have enthusiasm but absolutey no ability what so ever.

Mine only went outside for the first time on Tuesday... so they're coming in on a night at the moment. From Friday we have guests staying so they'll be living outside.

Again I'm no expert, but I'm a lot further north than you so go for it! Just keep an eye on the overnight temps in case of frosts

Everything is out... One or two things might be a bit grumpy about it, but I don't think it'll be cold enough to kill anything. And we've had it with taking things in and out for this year!

I would say no to cues. Courgette could be covered over if it turns nippy.

My toms are going out to but I will cover them just in case.
                  Chillies are coming in.

This morning I downloaded an app called Climendo which "claims" to be the most accurate forecaster around........the jury is still out on that claim. However it stated that my lowest overnight temp this week will be 12C so I bit the bullet & planted out some Courgettes & Squashes.

All of my stuff has been outside in a UH Greenhouse for about 4-5 weeks - I fleeced it over in the cold snap but it has been uncovered for a few days now.

                      Toms
                      Chillies
                      Cucumbers
                      Squashes
                      etc

All my omtoes are in the unheated greenhouse and most have flower buds on.
My 4 cucumbers are in the conservatory. Two of thrm now have flowers on.
My chillis are also in the conservatory, Cayanne and Hot Wax, also with tiny buds.

No chance, my unheated GH was down to just 1 degree last night. Only the true hardy babies are in there, the rest stays indoors for now.

All tomatoes are out full time...
Chillies and cucs during the day...
For first time, some chillies left out tonight..
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

Personally I'd never keep cucs out at night this early in the season, they seem to be more sensitive.

Going by the forecast it should be alright to keep toms in unheated greenhouse for now, but be careful about being tempted to plant them out. I've made the mistake before when there's been a very warm end of april/ start of May so I planted them out only for there to be a run of cool nights come 2nd half of May. In the end the ones I planted out in June ended up overtaking the ones I planted out in early May.
