  • Ditching the GLASS

I have 2 GH (4x6 and 6x10) and soon to add a third (4 x 6). They are all glass.

    I really would like to replace the glass with polycarb, here are the questions;

    1. Twin wall or not?

    2. Any known sources at a reasonable price?

    3. Is there any reason to not do the above?

Reasons; Mainly around safety and maintenance.
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

Deffo twin wall for two reasons (1) It is less flexible than thin polycarbonate (2) It has better insulation properties than single thick polycarbonate.

One of the reason people give not to do it is that it can be blown out if not secured properly I have had mine 5/6 years now and never had that problem.

It isn't cheap but properly fixed it will last as long as glass, Screwfix do a Horticultural glazing pack that maybe worth looking at.

Thanks for the replies - I will look into both.

I would use the 'dab o sealant' method to secure the W clips. Did not realise screwfix did them will take a look and also check toolstation.

I can speak from personal experience & say these are good plus you get the tape:

Thanks JackArmy, as Pots says, this is a great price. Did you go direct (phone) or order online? Was it on Fascias.com or greenhouses.co.uk ?

BM's suggestion also works out at about £4 a pop if you include the delivery. Seems very reasonable with the bonus of the tape. I think, I will make like the Queen and have a second birthday very soon.

The tape is very good as not only does it stop water getting between the walls but also stops insects making a new home. It works out a lot cheaper than buying the plastic edging strips.

Is it as easy to cut as they state? Eg. Stanley with a fresh blade?

Yes cuts like a dream with new blade and a good straight edge. Also get some decent silicone sealant and bed your glazing panes on that.

So rather than just the W clips, the whole sheet gets a bead on the frame?

I'll get onto this over Easter perhaps. Just got to calculate how many sheets I need. I guess my Autovents will need a tweak as the windows will require a little less of a shove.

The last lot camefromgreenhouses . co .uk, the first time i ordered though was via amazon , same price and online.

But yes, Big Mals looks a better deal with the tape as a bonus.
