Mine are planted about 5' apart to allow space for them to grow, air to get to them and room for me to harvest easily. You could put them a bit closer but I'd not want mine closer than about 4'. Re depth, mine are in the ground so have infinite depth. What will your bed be founded on?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Alison, the bed will be open bottomed but i just felt a bed was a good idea so i could meet the requirements of the blueberries within it.

So the roots can go down as far as they want ,but the soil below the bed depth will just be normal soil.

Depends a bit on your soil type. Mine is reasonably acidic so they grow perfectly well in the ground. If yours is more alkaline then you'll need to modify it and keep it that way. Am guessing in that case, the deeper the better, within reason.

I grow mine in my usual half dustbins in ericaceous compost with a 3ins+ mulch of bark and they seem to love it, and it means you can move plants about as needed, I shift mine into a sheltered site for the winter then back into full sun from march onwards and this seems to suite them as they are now loaded with fruit gradually changing colour, a bit more sun would help but this slower ripening seems to work in our favour as the taste seems more intense, or is it just we have waited for so long?

Mine too are in half barrels with some hard core drainage, with ericateous compost, only use rain water, they look to be very happy and full of fruit,i did top up the compost this year,i have moved the containers around, and no roots were protruding, they appear to be a very fine root mass near the surface, like Alison said, they do need a good gap between them,i am very suprized at how much they do grow in a year,if in a container you can shuffle then apart easy, but in the ground you are stuck, also they can be twisted round to best suit the space as the branches grow,

we are lucky, we can use tap water as it comes from the hills behind the house, about 3 miles away and it never seems to worry the lime haters, no fluoride either
