  • Strawberry in container care - after fruiting

Id have quite good (surprisingly) success with my strawberrys in those trio stackable planters (see pic below) , I planted them out as runners last autumn/winter.

Im not sure what the best thing to do is after they have finished cropping, should I

    a) Leave the plants alone and just apply maybe a granular fertilizer to help them get strength to next year

    b) Remove and repot in fresh soil/compost

    c) Take early runners, ditch the old plants and plant the fresh runners in new compost

also ive read its best to defoliate after fruiting? any advice on that?

    Thanks

    a) I would apply a 7-7-7 fertiliser to give them something over winter. Then when growth starts next year give them a high nitrogen fertiliser, follow this with high potash when they start to fruit.

    b) N/A.

    c) I run a 3 year cycle with my strawbs, replacing a third of my plants every year, at this time they go in fresh compost to prevent build up of nasty's.

I just leave mine to over winter and tidy them up in spring.

One more tip when they start to throw runners take care none root in the existing pots as this will overcrowd them and the plants will fail.
