  • Leave it or pick it up

    Hi
Sorry f this has been asked loads before but I cannot seem to see the answer.

Once I have used my hoe on the weeds, do I have to pick them or can I leave the on the service? I ask because. I recall someone telling me when I first got the allotment to leave them and the sun will kill them. I am a bit sceptical.

It is best to hoe on a warm, dry day. As you have been told weeds will shrivel and die. Don't hoe perennial types of weed like bind weed and ground elder, they should be pulled or dug out then burnt, drowned or put in a bag for a year to then add to a compost heap

I don't hoe at all, I either pull the weeds up or use a patio knife. Everything* is left on the surface as a mulch, even bindweed (it won't re-root after being cut)

          * except dandelion & groundsel flowers, which can go to seed even several days after the weed has been pulled out. The flowers go in the bin, the rest of the plant becomes mulch
