  • Companion planting for Raspberry canes

    Hi all,

Looking for advice. I have a bed I want to put some raspberry canes in. There is also some space (about 1.5 square metres) for something else next to them. I was thinking rhubarb or gooseberries, but I don't really like them!

Do t mind whether fruit or flowering (or both)

    Thanks,

    Dom

No point growing anything you don't like
What about blackcurrants? Or more raspberries - summer, autumn, yellow, black - lots of choice.

Hmm, blackcurrant could be interesting. Do they need a lot of sun? It doesn't get a massive amount there. Is it something you need to net to stop birds getting them all?

Blackcurrents can tollerate a bit of shade, you will need to net them later on when getting ripe to stop the birds

Raspberries do not like to dry out so you will need something that does not take the surface moisture away. They have a their roots near to the surface.

Also raspberries will soon take over the other bit of ground. I would expect that by next year there will be new raspberry canes appearing in it. Raspberries are not really well behaved plants.

I planted asparagus next to mine. There is a bit of a problem with invasions of raspberries, but generally it's worked well.
