I have not as yet found one that will work all the time. Things to try:-

    carrier bags tied to post
    cds on a string
    scarecrow (keep moving it around)
    bottle spinners
    wind chimes
    nets over precious crops
    foil on string
    hawk kites
    water jet sensor sprayer

I am sure peeps can suggest other things. But basically, noise and movement which changes so they don't become familiar with it.

I use wire collars until seedlings get bigger and then netting- it works very well when I remember to do it!
No matter:the allotment is lovely, the tadpoles have legs, my sea kale has germinated and I am glad to be home.

thanks for the list of bird scarers. I have tried most of them , perhaps I should buy a machine gun and shoot the blighters .

I'm with Kris, nets are the only way I can keep them off my stuff.

My better half made me "frames" bits of off cuts, 2x2, measured to size to fit my beds and covered with garden netting. They are about 18 inches high and 3 foot long, I find they move about the garden a fair bit to cover what is most precious at the time. Good luck, I see more of the pigeons here than I do my teenagers!!

At this time of the year the local pigeons sit on the electricity wires watching the allotments waiting for an unwary newbie to provide them with dinner. I cover my rows of young brassicas with lengths of chicken wire bent into a U shape. I find that by the time the plants have grown enough to be pushing the wire off the pigeons aren't interested. Then the following Spring when the PSB is nearly ready and is bush sized I throw netting over it as they suddenly develop a taste for it.

Further to replies about pigeon scarers I have found one that seems to work . I bought some spinners from Screwfix called scary eyes. I keep moving them around my plots and they seem to be working.P S they cost £9.99 each,i bought 3,but as they seem to work I call that cheap..

I have found that many bird scarers require wind to be of any benefit so during a nice calm spring/summer they are of little use. I used to use lengths of old video tape tied to branches as they required little wind but was prone to wrapping itself around the branch which was a pain so as suggested above, netting is the best deterrent.

Pigeons haven't touched my stuff at all this year because they've been to busy eating my dandelions and docks! I haven't been able to weed much just now and am finding that they are doing it for me.
                        Maybe the way to go?

A few of these sown among the veg should keep the pigeons out...

Someone else posted this on another thread (apologies, I saved the pic and don't remember who posted it).

following on from SkyChild, I believe pigeons ate my broccoli leaves when i planted them out in the open, so i've now planted a few under nets and a few among some weeds and potatoes (in piled soil)... so far so good, it's been a while and they've all been untouched!

I have found the birds have eased up eating some of my veg in the last week or so as there is more about for them. Although it is very strange they haven't stripped either of my cherry trees(yay!) I have had lots of lovely ripe fruit (yay! yay!)
